Important information about exercising in a NSW national park during COVID-19

NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) is working to keep your local national parks open during the COVID-19 pandemic, but as NSW national parks have experienced significant increases in visitors in recent weeks, particularly during weekends, we need your help.

Although we have had to close some facilities, including campgrounds and high-visitation areas (beaches, picnic facilities, busy lookouts) to protect staff and the community, many walking tracks remain open for exercise and we want to keep them that way. We ask that you please comply with the following directives and health measures:

  • In line with the advice of government and health authorities, you are advised to cancel all holiday travel plans to NSW national parks

  • If your planned visit to a NSW national park is for a purpose other than exercise, you should reconsider your plan as you may be in breach of the current public health orders

  • If you wish to exercise in a national park, choose a park close to your home. Visitors are reminded that non-essential travel is currently not permitted

  • If you are unwell, stay at home

  • Practice social distancing  

  • If you arrive at a national park or other public space and it is too crowded to practice social distancing, it is your responsibility to leave the area. Please do not wait to be instructed by NPWS or police.

NPWS officers and NSW Police are patrolling national parks to ensure visitors are complying with social distancing measures and other public health orders.

If visitors do not comply with these public health requirements, NPWS may need to close more areas of national parks. If an area closes, it is unlikely we will be able to reopen it until the public health guidelines change.

So please enjoy our NSW national parks, but be sure to exercise care while exercising your body, so we can keep these incredible places open.

Corona Virus Update:

Latest information from AGDH and the scientific community says that that social distancing and home isoloation may run for 6 months, and hence, as more people become infected, may last a longer.

Membership Subscriptions:

There will be an arrangement to rebate members part of their membership subscriptions for the club closure period for all members who renewed priot to 7th April 2020. However, this rebate can not be extended to membership rates that are $65.00 or less as these subscription levels do not cover our member insurance costs.

How to stay fit and healthy at home

It’s easy to prioritise work commitments, house cleaning and taking care of others during the outbreak, and forget about yourself. Creating a workout schedule for the week is a great way to be motivated and stay on track. Establishing a home workout routine is a safe alternative to going to the gym. Many workouts, including bodyweight exercises and yoga, require little to no equipment. There are many fitness apps and free online resources to help make your home workout more effective and enjoyable.

Corona Virus Update:

There is a fine balance between staying physically and mentally fit, as well as taking sufficient precautions against the Coronavirus. From Friday 3rd April, anyone attending our events will be required to have their own personal sanitiser plus will be required to wear a mask on arrival and whilst attending the pre and post briefings. Participants will also have their temperature taken on arrival at the event and will not be able to take part should they have a temperature. Each participant will be required to sanitize their hands prior to and after the event plus on the event where required. As COVID-19 advice continues to change we are monitoring the updates closely. Should the Government issue a lockdown for outdoor fitness actvities we will cease our events immediately. Government imposed limits for outdoor fitness activities currently stands at 10 participants.

To manage our events, members must book by SMS so that we do not exceed the maximum allowable number of 10 participants. All leaders have the option of accepting a lesser number than the maximum allowable Government requirement. All Booking to: T. 0409 917 776. The club has also adopted a

2 meter and 5 meter safe distancing rule respectively for all briefings and while participating on walks.

Furthermore, we have available for members 4 bottles of personal hand sanitiser at $5.00ea and face masks are available for $2.00 each. These are currently not in stock but are expected to be available in about 7 days. While we are dealing with the Coronavirus, don't let mental health slide down the hill. EVENT CANCELLATIONS 

At the time of collating our events for the Autumn program, COVID-19 advice has been changing rapidly. At this time the club has chosen to run its event where possible in the hope of keeping everyone fit and healthy to fight this virus should they become infected. Parcticing safe distancing of 1.5m (min) is an absolute must if we are to continue with our events. As the advice from the Government changes, there is a real risk that in the not too distant future the club will have to cancel part or possibly all of its events. We hope in the meantime that this does not come to fruition. Members are encouraged to check this page for further notifications and the Government website for information and the latest updates on COVID-19 and then make an informed decision as to whether to attend or not attend club events.

Corona Virus Update:

As of today, 16th March, anyone entering Australia from any overseas country is required to self-isolate for 14 days. We would ask for your support in not attending events if you have travelled overseas, until you have self-isolated for 14 days and you are well. Read more.

What can I do?
If you are sick, stay away from others – that is the most important thing you can do.
You should also practise good hand and sneeze/cough hygiene:
* wash your hands frequently with soap and water, before and after eating, and after going
to the toilet
* cover your cough and sneeze, dispose of tissues, and use alcohol-based hand sanitiser,
and
* if unwell, avoid contact with others (stay more than 1.5 metres from people).
As well as these, you can start a range of social distancing and low cost hygiene actions now.
These simple, common sense actions help reduce risk to you and to others. They will help to slow
the spread of disease in the community – and you can use them every day – in your home,
workplace, school and while out in public.

Future Walk Amendments:

As part of the current State of Emergency declared by the NSW Premier and in response to predicted extreme and catastrophic fire weather, all national parks, including tracks, trails and campgrounds in Greater Sydney, will be closed from time to time during these events. Please visit this page for any event amendments, cancellation and postponements etc.

Paddle Workshops Help Build Smarter Safer Paddlers:

Paddlers should be reminded that our club goes to great lengths to ensure all paddlers are well educated and are on the same page with the rescuer when it comes to retrieving a paddler after capsize.

Our paddle workshops help you to become a smarter safer paddler. Paddlers who have not undertaken a workshop can often prolong the time it takes to be rescued and may also compromise their safety and that of the rescuer.

As a paddler, you are responsible for your own safety and are expected to take an active role to ensure that you act safely at all times whilst participating in our paddle events.

Don’t compromise your safety or the safety of your fellow paddler. Our paddle workshops are not only educational but also a fun experience on the water.

The next paddle workshop is expected to held in 2020.
