Saturday 02 December   Sunrise: Native Bushland Corridors of Sydney

NOTE: Electronic Recording of This Sunrise Event is NOT PERMITTED.

Come along and join us as we discover the Ferndale walking track and Blue Gum Creek. Walk through wet gullies, open forest and be amazed at the wildlife! This walk starts out on one of Sydney’s classic walking tracks. Not far from the Chatswood CBD we enter a beautiful valley which is rich in vegetation. This is Sydney’s Ferndale walking track which will take us up from the shores of the Lane Cove River before crossing over into another delightful bushland corridor where we will meander close to Blue Gum Creek. This creek and valley are another of Sydney’s beautiful places to visit. The richness of vegetation in the Blue Gum High Forest and lush green ferns sets this walk apart from many others within the Sydney area. The small amount of Blue Gum High Forest that remains today is listed as a critically endangered ecological community under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 & in NSW under the Threatened Species Conservation Act 1995. Blue Gum High Forest occurs only in areas where rainfall is high and the soils are relatively fertile (derived from Wianamatta Shale). Blue Gum High Forest consists not only of the magnificent trees but is also host to a diverse variety of shrubs, herbs, grasses, ferns and vines. Blue Gum Reserve adjoins Lane Cove National Park and contains an abundance of wildlife. Whilst walking in the reserve you are most likely to see some of the 64 recorded bird species. Meet just inside of NP gate on Max Allen Road, Lane Cove National Park for a 7.30am departure. Parking also available in Lady Game Drive should you not have a NP pass. Distance is approximately 9km. Expected event finish time is 10.05am.

Saturday 22 July   SunrisePlus: The Cascades

The walk first takes you from the plateau down through dry heath to the upper creek system of Middle Harbour, then follows the lush green forests that grow by the creek side. On our trek we visit a water-run known as ‘The Cascades’ which was once damned for swimming in the mid-1930s. It is interesting to note that the pool was built during the depression era and used by the public along with being frequently used as a campsite by the Scouts in the 1930s, and as a “jungle training” site during WWII. There is also a lovely inscription with the etching of the word “LADIES” where it is believed a small change room once stood. Meet at 26 Wyatt Avenue, Belrose for a 7.30am departure. Distance is approximately 13km. Expected event finish time is 11.15am. 00013-3.5R

Big Week Away at Newcastle Cancelled:

With many members saying they would like to attend the BiG March Event plus with it being heavily promoted for over several months, in the end, we had only been able to to attract six members with expressions of interest.  So, due to this extreme downturn in interest we have decided to canclel the BiG March 2023 Week Away. And, with several new activities on the itinerary ranging from kayaking, bushwalking/beach walking, visits to historic sites plus more, it is very disappointing that the club could not attract sufficient numbers to hold this exciting week away for its members. Multi day events such as this one are important in bringing members together. Not only are they a fun time away, they increase members friendship and comaraderie. It would be a crying shame if events like this should become non-existent in the future.

COVID Update:

Scientists have said a new Covid variant that carries an “extremely high number” of mutations may drive further waves of disease by evading the body’s defences.

Only 10 cases in three countries have been confirmed by genomic sequencing, but the variant has sparked serious concern among some researchers because a number of the mutations may help the virus evade immunity.

The B.1.1.529 (Omicron) variant has 32 mutations in the spike protein, the part of the virus that most vaccines use to prime the immune system against Covid. The mutation rate is double that of the Delta strain.
